The High Court at Milimani Law Courts has found former Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and Caspal Obiero guilty of the murder of Sharon Otieno, the 26-year-old Rongo University student killed in September 2018.
Justice Cecilia Githua delivered the verdict on count one today, nearly eight years after Sharon’s body was found in a thicket in Owade, Homa Bay County, a day after she was reported missing. The ruling followed testimony from 42 prosecution witnesses and 81 exhibits, including phone records, SMS data, and forensic evidence establishing Obado as the father of Sharon’s unborn child.
Earlier in the same judgment, the court had acquitted all three on the separate count of murdering Sharon’s unborn baby, ruling that under the “born-alive” principle in Kenyan law, a foetus that dies in the womb does not qualify as a “person” for purposes of a murder charge.
Today’s guilty verdict on count one brings a legal close to a case that became a national flashpoint on political power, gender-based violence, and impunity and now moves the story toward its next chapter: sentencing.
